Running WordPress on your own web host is more challenging compared to using a free blogging account from WordPress.com.
WordPress.com account comes with most of the popular plugins and themes which makes using it a breeze. Setting up the Open Source WordPress (WordPress.org) on your hosting account is usually quite simple too, as most hosting companies are equipped with Fantastico auto-installer script.
However, the default installation contains only the very basic features. You’ll need some patience and persistence to find out what is missing and to download and install them.
There seems to be some issues with migration from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. I suspect it could be due to the recent launch of version 2.2 (in May). Though there’s a compatibility list available, I could only find this theme that I’m using almost error free. MummyDear still have problem with migrating Chinese Characters though. She decided to re-type in the characters instead.
I’ve also installed the Automattic Stats plugin that shows which are your most popular posts and where your traffic is coming from, etc.
Overall, the installation and migration was quite smooth.

It’s like that — you won’t get it right the first time, but it helps to keep looking for a theme you like, and then settle down with it. You will learn about the customization as you tweaked your blog over time.
I’m not an expert, but do let me know if you need help, I will if I can
And, good luck!

Hi Pelf. Went to yr site and found tt u’re using Mandigo theme, which is also the one that I’ve chosen for my blog, but have run into some problems … such as the emoticons not appearing where they were placed in my text, and what-u-see at the text editor is not what-u-get when I view my blog. Also I’m figuring how to add ‘Leave a Reply’ comment box in one of my pages. I like this theme very much, hence likely I’ll look into modifying it. Guess this will take me some time to figure them out … …
